Telephone transformer : how it works

The basic principle is destructive interference, which can be imagined in the following manner:  when two waves of the same wavelength meet and are also 180 degrees out from one another in terms of phase (equals the trough of one wave meets the crest of another and vice versa) then the two waves cancel one  another out.


In sound engineering this principle is used in the form of “active noise reduction” (ANR) and serves to eliminate or reduce undesirable sound. The firm Sennheiser applies this technology in certain headphones. Moreover, it has found application in the motor vehicle industry, e.g. in the insulation of interior spaces.
